This section was the only spot on the route where we employed "bat hooks."  The rock here was so crumbly that our typical hooking just wouldn't work.  In fact, the bat hook I'm on in this picture is starting to pull right out of the wall!  White powder is forming on my pant leg, and the hook is making ongoing chipping sounds.  I am frantically drilling a rivet to try to get off of this hook before it blows.
