| Wings of Steel
About to hike out. We stashed most of our junk, so we could return for it later. You can almost see Fresno from the summit of El Capitan. We hiked back to Camp 4, thinking that the climb was over. We had no idea that it had actually only begun. If anything, the Valley Boys seemed even more enraged that we had actually completed the route! The threatening confrontations continued even as we spent a few days retrieving our gear from the top of El Cap and cleaning up the base of our route. When we finally climbed into my car to leave the Valley after the whole thing, almost three months had passed from when we started. Again, we thought with relief that the whole thing was behind us. We were wrong. The story continues to this day. Wings of Steel has not had a second ascent as I write this, despite the attempts of dozens of teams. One failed team even including a self-admitted member of the original chopping party. The lies about the route have continued unabated by time or evidence to the contrary. The herd mindlessly shuffles on!
