Wings of Steel

Finally, inspired by the controversy on the supertopo threads, and calls for a second ascent to finally tell the objective story, Pete Zabrok decided to attempt the second ascent.  With his friends and partners, Tom Kasper and Randy Wenzel, Pete began working on the first pitch of the route.  It should be stated that Pete is a veteran of 30 El Capitan ascents, each by different routes, and some of those by acknowledged "burly" routes, like Reticent Wall and the Jolly Roger.

Mark and I went to the Valley to offer "consultation" help, and we showed the guys what sort of stuff could be hooked.  During our time spent with Pete, Tom, and Randy, we were encouraged to see their good natures and honesty.  These guys were quite obviously committed to finding out the true story and seeing what the route really is, unlike the vast majority of people who have either perpetrated the lies or who have blindly believed the lies.

Pete's posts following his attempt on the route can be found on the supertopo site.  Suffice to say that Pete, Tom, and Randy found the route to be not a bolt or rivet ladder.
